The Lightning Polka (Line Dance to “Sin Wagon”/”Kerosene”)

“The Lightening Polka” is my favorite dance so it’s going to be #2 on our list of staples to learn. Yeah, there are easier things out there to learn and dances that we use way more at Saddleridge… but there is something to be said about a favorite. You just have to go with it. It’s kind of like that favorite sweater you put on every winter. This is just one we get to wear twice a night when line dancing.

The dance was choreographed by Peter Metelnick and the step sheep can be found here at Kick It. As it says at the top of the step sheet, the dance can be done to “Sin Wagon” by the Dixie Chicks. This is the primary song we hear it to; however, we also use it to “Kerosene” by Miranda Lambert (which isn’t listed on the step sheet). Of course, you can use it for anything that fits the steps. So have at it!

We find that the most difficult part is remembering which way you are turning since this one is a four wall. Of course, others find the jumping the hardest part. To each their own!

I learned the dance first from this video. It is in French, but just follow her feet. (When you watch enough line dancing videos in French, you start picking up what they’re saying as it is.)

Kick back. (Line Dance to “Smoke a Little Smoke”)

If you want to talk about a song that has the ultimate swagger to it, I have to toss Eric Church’s “Smoke a Little Smoke” up there for a nomination.  You may not agree with the lyrical content or partake in it, but man, it’s a great song.  But well, Eric Church can sing us the phone book and we will buy it. [Yeah I stole my own line from twitter this week about Billy Currington.]

Since the song is played once a night, it was a one that we said ‘okay, we need a dance to.’

“Kick back” by Hana Reis is the dance we chose to learn for “Smoke a Little Smoke.” [We also sometimes use this for "My Kind of Party."]

This video is not step by step.  You are going to probably have to stop, pause, rewind until you get it. It took me a day or two to actually get this one cleanly at home. It took us three or four tries to get the timing right actually on the dance floor. But if you’re like us, you will hear the dance to the music and you’ll get it. No worries there. You’ll also hear in the song where the dance has a restart. (For those who are technical minded, it’s near the end of the third wall.)

Here is the step sheet at Hana’s blog.

We think this dance has the same swagger as the song so it’s definitely one we’ll keep in our back pocket.

Askin’ Questions Line Dance

On the Facebook fan page for 38 Step Line Dancing Blog, they asked their readers to list their favorite dances of 2010. Honestly, I never heard the song “Askin’ Questions” by Brady Seals (that I can recall) until the dance was listed by a commenter.  It was added to my running list of dances to learn at some point, and it became my thing to learn this week during my procrastination time.  (You know, that time of day when you are supposed to be doing something like cleaning your house for a family gathering for the NFC & AFC Championship games…. kind of a big deal… but I digress.)

Holy hell is this song addicting.  If you haven’t heard it yet (which I honestly can’t recall if I have before the past few months):

The dance, I think, is equally addicting.  The one that I found I like most is choreographed by Larry Bass.  The step sheet can be found here.  Me being me can only half follow a step sheet.  I probably would have failed miserably before things like YouTube.  Although, I suppose once you get used to HOW to read it, it’s not that bad.  I generally read it to get the idea of what I’m doing and then follow a video like the one below.

The video is not in English but this guy shows it well.  He shows you four walls slowly first.  Just keep doing one wall until you get the hang of it.  (Beauty of pause and ‘rewinding’ the video.)  Add the next as you get more comfortable.  And then he does it with music.  Once I’m feeling good with the dance, play the song without the video to practice.  I’m persistent and will restart the song every time I mess up.  Once I can get through the entire length, I feel that I’ve mostly mastered the dance.

Well… at least in my living room.

Update: We use this to “Wildflower” by the Jane Dear Girls… and whatever else we get it to fit to.

Lickety Split (Line dance to “Stuck Like Glue”).

I can’t decide if the name sounds dirty or fun.  But I guess either work!  (No clue where my brain is today.)

Kalli and I decided a few weeks back that we needed a dance to go with Stuck Like Glue… otherwise everybody was going to get stuck with our (her) interpretive dancing to the song.  Think “charades” to songs… so a youTube search found “Lickety Split” by Amanda Andrews.  We’ve found that it’s simple to learn and pretty fun on the floor.  It’s also one of those dances that you can use to a number of things (which I personally always like).  “Stuck Like Glue,” of course, is our favorite.

I’ll add to the list as I come up with things, but other songs that this dance goes with well (from my playlist… so the song may not neccessarily be released and one you’ll hear out):

“Love Done Gone” by Billy Currington
“Welcome to the Future” by Brad Paisley
“You Do The Math” by Brad Paisley

I’ll add to this list as I come up with more (or remember them for that matter).  There are quite a few while we’re at Saddleridge we’ll use this for if we have nothing else.

Side Note:  Boo to building management closing off the empty office in our building… I used to use it for lunchtime line dancing lessons for coworkers.  Boo to people doing their job.  Booooo.

Side Side Note:  Boooooo to underage girls who sneak into bars and just get obnoxiously drunk.  You annoy us.
